Local Search Is Where Nursery Enquiries Start, and Most Settings Are Invisible There

Updated: Sep 9

If you want to understand where a nursery loses enquiries before a parent even picks up the phone, start with local search. Ninety-nine percent of people have used the internet to research a local business in the past year, and 46% of people say they often include the phrase "near me" in their search queries (SEOprofy, Local SEO Statistics 2026). For a decision as local and as personal as choosing a nursery, that behaviour is arguably even more pronounced. Yet many settings, especially independents and smaller groups, treat their Google Business Profile as a box ticked once at setup and never touched again.
That is a missed opportunity, because the same research shows customers are 2.7 times more likely to trust a business with a complete, well-maintained profile, and a verified Google Business Profile alone generates around 200 clicks or interactions a month (SEOprofy). For a nursery, those clicks are calls, direction requests, and website visits from parents actively searching in your catchment area right now, not a cold audience that needs to be persuaded a category even exists.
The practical fix starts with the basics done properly and kept current: accurate opening hours, up-to-date photos of the actual setting (not stock images), a steady flow of recent reviews, and swift, professional responses to every review, positive or negative. From there, local SEO for a nursery means making sure your website itself is built around the searches parents actually run: "nursery near me," "[your area] nursery Ofsted rated," "baby room [your town]," rather than generic phrases like "quality childcare" that carry almost no local search volume.
For multi-site groups, this work multiplies. Each setting needs its own accurately geo-tagged profile and its own local landing page, because a parent searching for a nursery in one town will not be persuaded by information about a sister setting fifteen miles away. Getting this right is unglamorous, ongoing work, but it sits at exactly the point in the parent journey where trust is built or lost before a single conversation has taken place.
